When we think of the 1980s, the best words to describe that decade are Oversized, Over consumption and just plain Over-the-top. Those were the cornerstone features of this decade of excessive materialism. Perhaps it was on account of the fact that it was a period of audacious insatiability, wealth and idealism. Shoulder braces came back to fashion in super-sized variants, and the “force suit” that mirrored ladies’ rising status in workplaces. Casual wear for the Yuppie collection was collegiate or very preppy with khaki pants, crisp white shirts, and traditional blue blazers, polos by Izod Lacoste and cotton sweaters draped over one’s shoulders while loosely tied in front. Glamor in the 80s, as depicted in the famous TV shows Dallas, translated to bedazzled evenings. In contrast to the more conservative and affluent set, the youthful counter-culture was defining their own unique style.
Music had a strong influence on the 80s Vintage fashion. Numerous pop music stars became fashion icons as well. Music icons like Annie Lenox and Grace Jones removed the lines of androgyny in Vintage fashion. Japanese Vintage fashionistars continued to push the 80s fashion to new heights by introducing the gender-bending, sculptural, avant-garde silhouettes. The fitness boom of the 80s spawned a fashion trend that took dance and exercise wear to the runway and the streets. The aerobics frenzy influenced designer style with Lycra among other fabrics.
Vintage fashion, at this point was gradually evolving into what we see these days. “Flash Dance”, The Movie, inspired women to start wearing tight leggings with oversized and baggy sweatshirts with necklines cut to hang casually from one shoulder. Jogging or track suits became even popular and a socially-acceptable casual day wear Vintage fashion. The 80s style with its juxtaposition of trends, variety and influences created a new unique legacy of vintage fashion. It emerged as an era of very sought-after vintage for its peculiar characteristics and long lasting impact.
